Dukezong Old Town Introduction

Nicknamed the Moonlight City, Dukezong is China’s largest and best-preserved intact Tibetan residential ancient town, a pivotal historic hub on the Ancient Tea Horse Road linking Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet. Brief History & Fire Restoration Note

Founded under Tubo Tibetan rule in the Tang Dynasty, Dukezong served as a military fortress and cross-border trading station for over 1,300 years. On January 11, 2014, a massive overnight fire destroyed most wooden courtyard buildings in the western half of the old town. A large-scale cultural restoration project faithfully rebuilt damaged structures following traditional Tibetan construction techniques, retaining original wall clay, timber frames and roof styles. Today the revived Moonlight City balances authentic Tibetan living with gentle tourism, free of over-commercial crowds.
